Saturday – Sense of time and Sense of Smell
Am I the only one who feels that their sense of time has changed? Is it a post-Covid or current pandemic symptom? I don’t mean the sense of time in a day or week necessarily but I am often confused when asked about events that might or might not have happened last year. (Maybe it’s an age thing, but we won’t mention that.)
Yesterday, we were questioning whether we had celebrated Easter at my parents’ place last year. We have been doing that for years. My mom thought that we must have, since it’s such a tradition in our family. She cooks an amazing meal and the Easter Bunny hides bags of goodie for the boys in her garden. Yes, the Easter Bunny still does this, even though the youngest grandchild my parents have is 19. So, to get the answer, my mom went to her diary. The trusted daily journaling diary she keeps.
No, she declared, we didn’t celebrate Easter, it was Covid lockdown. Sigh. How could I forget? Obviously we wouldn’t have met to celebrate this tradition. We were all so scared and locked up in our own homes. One year has passed now. My mom is vaccinated and less worried. The Easter tradition is somewhat back. The Easter bunny did not hide anything in the garden, but we did get a delicious meal. The important thing with traditions, is that they can be adjusted and maintained if one desires. But one must be flexible.
My sense of Time has shifted, probably due to the pandemic, but I can’t say that it bothers me that much. Just look back on old photos or ask my mom to read her diary. But, my sense of Smell (and taste) is back. And for that I am very happy!
A week ago, we were by the sea and “Yes!” I exclaimed, for I could smell the sea breeze again. So that’s a good thing. Our sense of smell often connects to a memory or an emotion.
Here is a photo of some plants in my parents’ garden that reminded me that my sense of smell might even be stronger than pre-covid times. Hmmm could that be?
Is there a smell that connects you to a certain memory or emotion?
I wish you all a Happy Easter Bunny time of year. Be well sweet people.
