Sunday – Skateboards

Sunday – Skateboards

Do you know how to ride a skateboard? I certainly don’t. But I think it’s super cool to watch those who know how. It must be a fun thing to master. Both my brother and my husband were big at skateboarding in their youth.

My husband, Bill, at the time when we were just two young and crazy kids (we started “dating” when I was just 19) took his skateboard everywhere. It was a great way to get around. My brother, Erik, also. And he thought it would be awesome if our dog, Sammy (a huge labrador/pointer mix), could pull him on that skateboard. Wow, I wish I had seen that. But unfortunately, the dog didn’t turn corners well. Or, he probably loved accelerating faster and faster….and there were no brakes. So the skateboard and the rider wiped out. But no one was badly hurt, luckily.

Our three sons also know how to ride. They’ve had skateboards since they were younger and they can ride. Our oldest son, Oskar, just recently tried out a remote controlled electric skateboard. And now he bought his own. A faster way to get around than on your own two feet, he explains. Gahhhh says his mom. He assures me that it has a brake. Yes, it would project him off it if he broke suddenly. But he doesn’t do that of course, and he doesn’t go as fast as he could. I won’t even mention that it can go almost as fast as my moped could, back when I had one of those.

Ok, so we’re all a little crazy when we’re younger. And that’s good. But parents worry. That’s our job. Maybe the crazy, daredevil gene runs in our family? My dad would have loved to have an electric skateboard. Of that I am sure. He always talked about building a go kart for our boys out of his old lawnmower motor. And he wanted to fly in one of those ultralight engines that you strap on your back. That was one of his dreams. There wasn’t much he was scared of. My brother is the same. But luckily we also get wiser when we get older. And I am grateful that our sons are careful, even though they like to do some pretty crazy and brave things…like bungee jumping. That topic might come up another time.

I’d love to hear about any crazy daredevil things you’ve done lately or in your youth. Be well, sweet friends. Be crazy, take risks, but be careful.
