Wednesday – Wo, What Were they Wearing? Wacky Wednesday!

Wednesday – Wo, What Were they Wearing? Wacky Wednesday!

What did you wear back in the 80’s when you went skiing? I remember having a one piece outfit that was green, purple and pink. I thought I looked so cool. What the heck was I thinking?

Today, my friend Jennifer and I felt like we were aliens on another planet. Or maybe we had gone back in time, somehow? We had moments when it felt truly eerie. Let me explain. We took the train and headed to one of the best ski resorts around: Verbier. The idea was not necessarily that we needed to go there; rather that we wanted to spend the day together. Walk-n-talk. I needed it.

It’s been too long since I have had a full day with a girlfriend, blabbing about everything and anything. And boy do we know how to talk and laugh. Laughing out loud feels so incredible! It felt like therapy. And due to the pandemic, neither of us have been much out of our own little home bubbles.

Once upon the mountain top, we strapped on the snowshoes, removed pandemic masks, on with the shades and off we went. Walking and talking. Every once in a while, we stop and gawk at the incredible scenery. White Alps all around. And no one anywhere in sight. And more fresh cold air than you think you need. Being in such an environment always makes me feel immensely grateful to live here.  But it does something else.

When you’re on top of the world at over 3000 meters, your mind opens up. My eyes can see far, my heart opens up, and my whole perspective on life changes when I can see that far. It feels the same when I stand on a cliff near the ocean. Wow. I am a speck on this wonderful planet. Breath deeply.

So, we’re walking and talking. After eating our picnic -yes, there were more humans around now- but we paid them no attention. And we decide to continue climbing higher up. All of a sudden, having been quite alone in our little bubble of our own conversations and not minding anyone else, we see this big gathering of people dressed as if they came straight out of the 80s! There is not one skier wearing a uniformly colored jacket or pants. These people were wearing wild outfits! And they were having a blast.

I kind of wish I had talked to the wild outfitted time travellers. I was wondering if they had bought the outfits or if they had gone into their parents’ closets. Well, their efforts put a smile on my face and we laughed at our own stories of being aliens on a new planet. It was a much needed excursion.

Oh, one last detail. A tip if you ever travel by train here. When the train conductor blows the whistle, get into that train as fast as you can. It apparently means that you don’t have more than about 7 seconds before the doors shut. It’s not that I didn’t know that, I just thought they would have looked to see that no one was just stepping into a wagon…Jennifer thought my arm was going to get amputated by the electric door shutting (on my snowshoes, not my arm). But there must be some kind of safety thing in place, cos the door did open up again and I was able to squeeze on, body and snowshoes whole. Phew! That was a crazy start to a wonderfully wacky day!

Stay safe, sweet friends and have yourself a day full of fresh air and different perspectives!
